Stigma Art Project

The HU Stigma Art Project is an ongoing call to artists and audiences alike to confront and depict the pervasive themes of shame, denial, and secrets that permeate our society. Through a variety of mediums and creative expressions, including fashion, this movement seeks to unearth and expose the often-hidden stigmas that shape our lives and interactions. By visually and emotionally representing these undercurrents, this project challenges viewers to reflect on their own perceptions and biases, fostering healing and a deeper understanding and dialogue about the societal issues that frequently remain in the shadows.

Each year in November, in conjunction with the International Conference on Stigma, we hold an art contest and offer prizes to winners in several categories, including paintings, drawings, essays, poetry, videos, songs, or other media. Through our Empower grant, a special category is open for works centering Black women/female identifying individuals. Open to everyone, the contest encourages individuals to use their creativity to share their perspective about stigma.

Centering on the theme “Beyond the Labels: Living and Thriving,” we recently wrapped up the 2025 contest. Click below to view the winners in a video from the Conference.
